African American Read In Chain 2011

Just like last year, our book club participated in the 2011 African American Read In Chain sponsored by the IRA. We read books written by African American authors to students at Coosada Elementary School. Our students enjoyed reading to the younger kids as much as they enjoyed having us visit!

The Book Club had a great evening with Jennifer Brown, author of Hate List. She shared her experiences as an author and about her inspiration for writing the book. She also sent autographed bookmarks for all of the members!

MUSTANG SPIRIT

For the first time since the book club began, we participated in the SEHS Homecoming Parade. Even the Book Club has the MUSTANG SPIRIT!

READ for the RECORD

On October 7th, members of the SEHS Book Club headed to Coosada Elementary School for Read for the Record. They read The Snowy Day by Ezra Jack Keats to the second grade pods. I think our kids enjoyed it as much as the little ones.

NEW MOON NIGHT

On April 1, the book club sponsored NEW MOON NIGHT and everyone had a great time. We enjoyed dinner, played New Moon trivia, drew for door prizes, and watched NEW MOON. All of the SEHS Twihards had a great night!

African American Read In Chain 2010

Today the club along with the Senior Class Officers and Mr. Graves participated in African American Read In Chain 2010. The objective of the activity was to share works by African American authors.

While Mr. Graves shared with English classes at SEHS, the book club members and class officers shared at CES and ARIS. The SEHS students had a GREAT time sharing with the younger children, and the little ones seemed to love it too.

We've been BUSY!!

Since the last post we have been BUSY! In October we hosted R.A. Nelson's author visit. He shared details about his writing career, gave us a sneak peek into his upcoming novel, and autographed our copies of his newest book, Days of Little Texas, for us. We also participated in Read for the Record in October. Many members visited Coosada Elementary and read The Very Hungry Catepillar to the students their.

With the premiere of New Moon in November we were approached by the Millbrook Independent to write the movie review for the newspaper. One of our book club members, Antoine wrote the review and did a GREAT job.

In December, we adopted a needy family for Christmas. We collected money, and bought and wrapped the presents, then delivered them to the family.... We hope we helped make one family's Christmas a little brighter.

We have many more activities planned for this semester and will keep you posted about our exciting events!

SEHS Welcomes R.A.Nelson

R.A. Nelson, author of the new Days of Little Texas as well as Breathe My Name and Teach Me will join us at SEHS on October 15th at 5:30 to discuss his new novel and his writing career. We will enjoy dinner ($5.00) per person prior to Mr. Nelson's presentation.

With close to 50 in attendance, Twilight Night was a huge success! We enjoyed Name that Twilight Tune, a Powerpoint of Forks, Washington, door prizes, dinner and a movie. Thanks to Mrs. Frederick, Ms. Howard, Mrs. Pope, amd Miss Fryer for your help and contributions. Thanks to the SEHS and HMS students and their friends and family that joined us for the fun!

**Conference call with Alane Ferguson went so well. She was very interesting and seemed genuinely excited to talk with us. I bought , read and donated Angel of Death to the library. I liked it better than Christopher Killer. It is already checked out.

**We can call her again if we would like. She is so willing to talk/share.

CONFERENCE CALL

Remember we have a conference call on Friday, February 27, with Alane Ferguson, author of The Christopher Killer. We will meet in my office at 9:00 for the call. Stop by my office sometime next week to drop off any questions you may want to ask Mrs. Ferguson.

NEW BOOKS ON THE WAY

Our next two books have been ordered and should be here FRIDAY, January 23rd. I'll make an announcement when they are here!

I have ordered my own PERSONAL copy of Twilight on DVD. It is scheduled to arrive on March 24th. Twilight Night is scheduled for April 9th. $5 covers your meals and a chance at a Twilight related door prize.

Books A Million recently had a "Book Fair" allowing patrons to buy books to be donated to the SEHS library. We have about 25 books at BAM for us! I am just waiting for the call that they are ready!

A few notes of interest are listed below!

1- I am ordering the two new books tomorrow. I tried to order them today, but the Books A Million # was busy all day. How weird is that???
2- We got a thank you note from the Christmas Clearing House for the donations we made to the family at Christmas. It's on the board in my office if you want to read it!
3- Some sites are telling that Twilight will release on DVD on March 21st. Nothing official from Amazon yet. I'll keep ya posted!

2- Money for our adopted Christmas family is also due! I am buying the gifts this weekend.
3- I know you all know that I am a TWILIGHT saga JUNKY!!! Remember we will host Twilight Night in the NEW library as soon as it is released on DVD...I am on the "Alert Me" list with Amazon so that I'll know when ts is scheduled to release!! DETAILS coming!
4- We have lots of new titles in the library. I shelved them in a special spot myself today! Check them out!

With the help of some members the next TWO books have been selected. We will read The Christopher Killer by Alane Ferguson and House by Ted Dekker and Frank Peritti. The cost is $12 for both books. Please drop by the library to sign up and pay for the books.

The next meeting is October 20th. We will listen to Jay's responses to our questions about ThirteenReasons Why and get "goodies" from him. Make plans to come! I have ordered Speak, and it should be here the 24th. Come by any time on the 24th or the 27th to get it. Remember that we have been invited to meet with the ECHS and HMS Book Clubs for dinner and a movie on November 10th to watch and discuss Speak:the Movie. Ordering First Book

We will have a quick meeting when I get the books to hand them out and discuss some book details. We will meet to discuss the book on October 20th at which time you will get a SURPRISE!!. We are back in the swing of things! Our first book of this year is Th13teen Reasons Why by Jay Asher. This year we will have a partnership with RSS, and book club members will spend two hours a semester helping in the library or classrooms at RSS. We will also elect officers for this year's club. Be thinking of who you would like to nominate. I look forward to our first meeting and will let you know soon when that will be!

As this first BOOK CLUB year draws to a close I want to thank those of you who joined and read along with me. I plan to start the 2008-09 year in full swing with some added activities. Encourage your friends and fellow book lovers to join next year. There will be a $10 fee for returning members which will include the first read of the year. New members may pay $20, which will include the first book and a BOOK CLUB t-shirt or just $10 for the first book. I look foward to a great second year. Have a relaxing, safe, book filled summer.

Last night members from the SEHS Book Club met with book clubs from Holtville and Eclectic at HMS to meet award winning author R.A. "Russ" Nelson. I have been waiting for this meeting for a month and was so excited it was finally here. Russ shared with us the background of how he came to be an author including childhood dreams, favorite authors, and early writing efforts. He then told us the story of how Teach Me and Breathe My Name found there way to the bookstore shelf...Hard work not luck according to Russ. Andrea, Maryum, and I had lots of fun!!!

Meeting an Author and Adding New Members

I am SOOO excited to have new members. Welcome Ali, Andrea, and Maryum! I am also excited about meeting R.A. Nelson at HMS in a couple of weeks. I am looking forward to meeting other book club members from other schools in the county. Can't wait Maryum and Andrea! Sorry others will not attend with us. GOOD LUCK to Britt who will be participating in All State Band that week and to Elizabeth who has a soccer game. Have fun to Kaytie, Dallas, and Ali who will be in Atlanta at the LION KING and the Georgia Aquarium while we are "Meeting the Author." I will get your book signed for you Kaytie! Authors' Festival Coming Soon

The Alabama Authors Festival is on Saturday, April 19th at Old Alabama Town. Their will be several authors there to meet including Russ, Joshilyn Jackson who wrote GODS IN ALABAMA, Jay Asher, the author of Thirteen Reasons Why, and R.A. Nelson, who wrote a couple of titles from which we will choose after we finish our next book.

Our next book is about a kid your age who has lost her mother. Like her mother she is an artist, which is difficult for her dad because it makes him constantly think of his deceased wife. Hey Guys! Our next book will be A Thousand Splendid Suns, also by Khaled Hosseini. You all seemed to LOVE The Kite Runner so much, and after talking to Dr. Langham, our superintendent, about our book club, he recommended that we read this one, saying that it is as good if not better than The Kite Runner. Let me know if you need a copy or if you want to get your own.
